Welcome!!!
To your horses personal training page where you can watchyour horse’s progress as we train them.
You will see many different scenario’s and desensitizing techniques that we work with.

NOTE: On Desensitizing

You can over-desensitize a horse if you don’t do it right, causing problems later on, such as control and safety problems.
When we are desensitizing (sacking out) a horse its not so much about the obstacle and or objects as it is the mental connection we are
establishing between your horse and us. We are waking up the horses mind and getting their gears turning and thinking and learning with us.

LASS'S STAR

"Star"

2008 Thoroughbred Mare - Roseburg, Oregon

Getting used to the feel of the whip - she was ancy about this at first, then relaxed and accepted it well.

She was worried about the bridge, so we had to face it, then she crosses it nicely.

Right after she crosses it, she got mad about it and let Katie know it by rearing up at her.

We could've been done with this task, but now she has to do it again due to attitude, now she presents refusal.

Nice...thank you!

On the other side is another bridge, one ask and she showed alot of effort, and crossed it without any attitude, so we're done here.

Then we proceeded over to the logs...she did great!

A few minutes after the last log, she got mad and reared up and knocked Katie down and jumped over her head,
then spun around, reared up, and jumped over her again! Of course I didn't get any pics, I was en route to help Katie.
I corrected her, and she tried the same thing with me - to no avail.

Back to work

Introducing the surcingle

Since she's got fear of dogs, we did some dog exposure - it went well with the dogs....

During our walk, she refused to walk with me through the little dip in the drive - we had to work through this, it needs fixed.

the deep water ditch, after a handful of more tries, she finally walked over it nicely

Learning to get off pressure

In asking her to get off pressure and move her hip over, she cow-kicks at me...

Saddling & Lunging to get the feel of the saddle - she did great for the first few times we practiced....

Asking her to give her face

testing the feel of the bit - asking for her face with BOTH the halter & the bit, she resists giving her face, then softens

Now it's time to put a foot in, she's felt the weight already, and is ready to be mounted.

This video was unplanned. Mike was getting ready to put the 1st ride on her, and she blew up on the lunge!
I pushed the button and managed to catch the end of it!
She's been saddled and lunged several times before without any incident. She gave it her all - vocally too! Silly girl.

she had an issue over by the door, then didn't want to cooperate and face it
he kept pushing her to go forward, then she got so mad she kicked straight out back with both hind feet
he kept asking since she hadn't moved forward yet even an inch, so she gave up and went forward and stood where asked and faced her issue

got a reward for cooperation, and went back to riding

Adventuring outside...

Examining the ditch from afar....

better get another to lead the way...

time to head back across...she's not gonna go this time without a fight, and she just came from the other side...
since she's already bucked Mike off today, we'll lead across to prevent another painful exit :-)

there, better....

Checking out that water ditch....

drive through the barrels hidden in the weeds, then drive in and back up and stand...

Arguing about crossing the water ditch....again

here we go.....

...then we'll walk around for a minute so she can get her head clear, and head back across 'til she goes nicely over

better....

better....and we're done with this for now.

Remember the "dip" in the driveway that was so much trouble? She rode right through it....

walkin right along when she realized she was headed right for the little puddle - and stopped

had to work this for a minute

there - she goes where asked on a loose rein...Good Girl!

double checking that she can still cross the water ditch, and did great

(below right) rode her closer to the grapple. she keeps an eye on it, and does very well

Round the rock pile - it didn't bother her at all

leg yields are challenging for her, as she doesn't like to give in to requests - but she is improving greatly
it wasn't long ago, she would throw a fit bucking in refusal to give to your right leg and move off it - so she is doing way better

you can tell by this series of photos that she got off Katie's left leg quickly as asked, but did some moving around arguing before getting off Katie's right leg

checking things out...

Star had trouble standing still for mounting in a new environment, but did it after her reminder....

Star was pretty worried and we had to work her in her safety zone for a bit...

Star was really nervous about getting closer to all the activity, and had to have a partner hold her hand to start out...

Star - at liberty - free time!

all done playing....

a new rider for Star - she started off wanting to buck, then after being checked and relaxed, she rode out pretty good

she spooked after crossing the trench, but regained herself without incident - she tends to be nervous and edgy, but can get through it if you hold her hand and encourage her

spooky barrels hiding in the weeds...she watches them, but does excellent

when Star checks something out - it's up close and personal

she crosses the bridge with no problem once she checks it out, she has been driven over it previously, but not ridden over it

the mound...her first try - she does great!

let's ride through the dip in the drive again...she looks closely, but goes without any fuss...

she spooked on the grain pan, so we had to go check it out closer
