Welcome!!!
To your horses personal training page where you can watchyour horse’s progress as we train them.
You will see many different scenario’s and desensitizing techniques that we work with.

NOTE: On Desensitizing

You can over-desensitize a horse if you don’t do it right, causing problems later on, such as control and safety problems.
When we are desensitizing (sacking out) a horse its not so much about the obstacle and or objects as it is the mental connection we are
establishing between your horse and us. We are waking up the horses mind and getting their gears turning and thinking and learning with us.

"Diamond"

Bay Draft-Cross Mare - Blackbutte Stables

Diamond is here to be halter broke and started under saddle in our "Foundation Education" program.

waiting...                                                   working on leading better

going into a stall took some time...

getting used to the rope...

brain teaser

she resists - wants to do what's natural and turn the other way towards Katie - but she has to follow the rope to stay outa trouble

good girl...

leading by a foot

you have to watch Diamond for getting pushy, especially when she is nervous about things...thats better

asked to step over a bale - she did

good girl...

figuring out how to get the hind end over is a trick!    :-)

she was sceptical of draggin the water hose to the middle pasture, but they got it done, and even had a taste herself

going for a walk outside, she was snorty at things, but did well....until the bridge snuck up her - she exploded
(I missed that part for a photo) we encouraged her to accept and cross the bridge

good girl                                        she had to jump the trench

the horse trailer was scary for her...but she loaded and unloaded nicely (just took a little while)

lunging...

we had to bring the round pen in for lunging with her - she really pulls hard on you, so we had to start with liberty work, she did well then
when we lunge a horse at liberty it's the same as on a line, they are expected to turn around facing us (not turning their butts to us)

we've done rope work with her, and lunging wasn't a problem, but the whip moving around beside her was a problem (she even struck at it when it was in front of her)

introducing the surcingle

curiosity only lasts a moment then discomfort sets in...this tight thing has to go!

woe's me...I could just hide my head and cry - it's still there....maybe more trying, and it will go

it buckles right here, maybe it I pull the tab really hard...it'll come off!

the ditch again...

then she spots the tarp!

a closer peek...

no way - outa here!

regaining composure...maybe another little looksy

good girl...                                         get a reward, clear it and turn around...                   no way! - there it is again!

ok, I got this....                          good girl!

saddling...this thing has to come off!

watching...

turn out - playtime!

she nipped Katie's leg while she was up there...

to start off, she tried to lay down again to get away from the girth, just needs to get busy thinking of other things

she had minor trouble learning to drive, mostly with Katie crossing back and forth behind her with the lines crossing over her back,
and having to give her face in an opposite direction than than she wanted - overall she learned well

giving her face nicely at a walk both ways, then a trot - to make sure she is focused on being a good citizen

bridling & mounting

on line ride - open arena

solo ride - open arena

she did great, and stood nice for dismounting
